Artist Statement

"Works of art are made of concept, material...and feeling." -Kenneth Martin

Whether the medium is watercolors, oils, pastels or acrylics, I approach the canvas with the desire to share what I feel. I want the enthusiasm I have for Polynesia and the Pacific to fan the dreams of others.

I am inspired by the shapes of O'Keeffe, the color of Van Gogh, the light of Cezanne and the playfulness of Miro.

Painting is joy. I see the bold unusual plants, the rugged landscape, the wildness of the Pacific, the beauty of the people and I want to cover the canvas with their beauty.

MARY SPEARS - Bio

   Spears' paintings are a reflection of her love of Hawaii, the tropics and Polynesia. Her work is bold and enthusiastic like the subjects she portrays. She works in oils, watercolors and pastels. Spears work has been featured in numerous two person and solo shows in Hawaii.
   In 1998, Spears participated in an invitational show as part of the Santa Barbara Millenium Printmaking Project. One of her monotypes was selected for the permanent collection of the County of Santa Barbara.
   On the Big Island, her work is featured at the Gallery of Great Things, Upcountry Connection and the Waimea Arts Council's Firehouse Gallery. On Oahu, she is represented by Island Treasures in Kailua and the Fine Art Associates at the Artloft in Honolulu.
